Course Content: This four-hour course teaches the basic techniques of adult CPR, the use of an automated external defibrillator and techniques to address both conscious and unconscious choking in adults. This course is designed to provide the lay responder with the knowledge and skills necessary to help sustain life and minimize the consequences of respiratory and cardiac emergencies until advanced medical personnel arrive.

Course Objectives: After the completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

· Recognize and respond to an emergency

· Check a conscious adult for life-threatening conditions

· Check an unconscious adult for breathing and signs of life

· Recognize and care for shock, respiratory emergencies and heart attack in conscious adults

· Recognize and care for respiratory and cardiac emergencies in unconscious adults

· Understand and utilize the four links in the cardiac chain of survival

· Demonstrate proper CPR techniques

· Demonstrate proper operation of an AED device

Course Content: This two-hour course teaches the basic techniques of standard first aid practices. This course is designed to provide the lay responder with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and respond to first aid emergencies.

Course Objectives: After the completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

· Recognize and respond to an emergency

· Check a conscious/unconscious adult for shock, life-threatening conditions, breathing and signs of life

· Recognize and care for soft tissue injuries including open and closed wounds and burns

· Recognize and care for injuries to muscles bones and joints including fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains

· Recognize and care for sudden illnesses including fainting, diabetic emergencies, seizures, strokes, poisoning, and allergic reactions

· Recognize and care for heat and cold related emergencies including heat exhaustion and stroke, hypothermia and frostbite.

Crisis Intervention: Staff Effectiveness/Safety Techniques/Personal Emergency Interventions Level 1

Course Content: This eight-hour course teaches the theory and techniques of participant will learn how to recognize and diffuse a potentially escalating crisis situation on each level of the continuum, as well as protect themselves from potential harm while ensuring the care, welfare, and safety of the consumers they serve.

Course Objectives: After the completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

· Identify the behavioral, environmental, and programmatic factors which impact staff effectiveness and promote therapeutic interaction.

· Identify sources of stress, potentially problematic situations and “at risk” times, and proactive strategies for preventing crises.

· Identify verbal and non-verbal “warning signs”, and demonstrate appropriate and effective de-escalation techniques.

· Describe counseling skills for crisis prevention, including the role of the counselor, types of counseling, and stages in the counseling process.

· Identify the circumstances under which safety techniques are to be used and to be able to define a “crisis” situation.

· Identify the appropriate safety techniques to use in different crisis situations and be able to correctly perform each technique.

· Identify the strategies for reducing and eliminating the use of physical restraint

· Identify and perform the personal emergency interventions approved for use

· Identify the advantages and benefits, as well as limitations, risk, and trauma and cultural considerations of each approved Personal Emergency Intervention and be able to recognize signs of physical distress and injury

· Identify when and how to terminate a Personal Emergency Intervention and be able to recognize signs of physical distress and injury

Course Content: This course discusses the use of ongoing methods of support that prevent or diminish a person’s challenging behaviors, through our understanding of the following. The course can be presented in either a four hour or a seven hour version.

Course Objectives: After the completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

· Understand who the person is though our Person Directed Supports

· Understand how a person can experience an improved quality of life through the Recovery Principles

· Understand how we support a person through the integration of best practices, a shared set of values, philosophies and technologies

· Focus not on “fixing a person” but on building competencies, creating opportunities and offering choices that help each person live a fulfilling life

· Provide viable alternatives and eliminates the need to rely on restrictive, aversive and coercive methods

Course Content: This course covers the fundamentals of the HCSIS reporting and investigation procedures outlined by DPW regulations and agency policy. Individual abuse will be explained, including the definition and categorization, as well as the direct care employee’s role in reporting, recognizing and reducing incidents of abuse. Participants will be engaged in discussion of various abusive situations which could occur in their interactions with individuals with developmental disabilities. Participants will discuss how to recognize and eliminate client abuse and neglect.

Course Objectives: After the completion of this course:

· Understand the Client Abuse Policy and their primary responsibility to protect health, safety and welfare of consumers

· Identify the various abuse categories and develop a greater understanding of both Abuse and I-I Abuse

· Recognize abusive situations/scenarios

· Identify ways to eliminate abuse

· Identify the various roles that are related to Incident Management

· Know the reporting process, procedures and timeframes for incidents

· Understand the Investigation process and their obligation to that process.

· Understand the critical nature of confidentiality.

Course Content: Participants will receive a historical overview of the evolution of the concepts of human rights and how our field of developmental disabilities has incorporated these into our services. This has often been a struggle and continues to be a critical obstacle in our ability to ensure quality services. Participants will review restrictive procedures within the residential and in home setting

Course Objectives: After the completion of this course:

• Participants will develop an understanding of individual’ bill of rights and how they apply to our Everyday Lives philosophies.

• Participants understand Self Determination and Freedom of Choice and how to support these practices

• Participants will develop an understanding of rights limiting procedures and restrictive procedures and how they are to be implemented.

• Participants will understand Restrictive Procedure Planning and the implications of restrictive practices

• Participants will also consider their own experience with use of restrictive procedures and understand how to avoid the unauthorized use of such procedures.

Medications Administration for New Hires

Course Content: This two-day course teaches the basics of medication administration to lay personnel. The first day of the course will focus on medications administration theory as well as medications policies and procedures. The second day of the course will focus on medication administration technique including successful demonstration of two classroom medication passes.

Course Objectives: After the completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

· Explain the five parts of the cycle of medication administration

· Define and describe the different categories of medications

· Explain the effects of medication including desired effect, no apparent effect, and unwanted effects

· Describe your responsibilities of observation including the differences between subjective and objective information

· Describe your responsibilities of reporting including immediate, certain-time, and routine reporting

· Explain why standard precautions are necessary in med administration

· List the five rights of medications administration

· List the series of checks that must be done to ensure a safe medication administration

· Demonstrate knowledge of medications administration theory, documentation, and technique

· Describe agency policies and procedures on med administration

· Demonstrate a successful medications administration practicum following all the guidelines and procedures that you have been taught
